_Malcolm Knowles might well be considered the founding father of adult
learning. He contrasted the “concept of andragogy, meaning “the art and
science of helping adults learn,”…with pedagogy, the art and science of
helping children learn” (Merriam, S. B., & Caffarella, R. S. (1999). Learning in Adulthood. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, p. 272).
Knowles’ original studies and writings arose from the assumption that
there are significant, identifiable differences between adult learners
and learners under the age of eighteen. Primarily, the differences,
according to Knowles, relate to an adult learner being more
self-directing, having a repertoire of experience, and being internally
motivated to learn subject matter that can be applied immediately –
learning that is especially “closely related to the developmental tasks
of his or her social role” (p. 272).

Daniel Levinson. The Theory of Life Structure.
Levinson's two most important books were Seasons of a Man's Life (with Maria H. Levinson, Charlotte N. Darrow, Edward B. Klein and Braxton McKee) and Seasons of a Woman's Life, which both continue to be highly influential works. His multidisciplinary approach is reflected in his work on the Life Structure theory of adult development. Many of the central ideas in Seasons of a Man's Life were published by Gail Sheehy who interviewed Levinson for her book Passages. Sheehy had access to Levinson's research in progress, and published her book before Seasons of a Man's Life' using some of Levinson's findings. Levinson proposed a theory based on a series of stages that adults go through as they develop. At the center of his theory is the life structure, the underlying pattern of an individual's life at any particular time. An individual's life structure is shaped by the social and physical environment. Many individuals' life structures primarily involve family and work, although other variables such as religion, race, and economic status are often important. Levinson's four "seasonal cycles" include preadulthood, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood.(Hutchison, E. (2011). Dimensions of Human Behavior: The Changing Life Course (4th). Los Angeles: Sage Puglishing, p. 276)

Gail Sheehy is an American writer and lecturer, most notable for her books on life and the life cycle. Her fifth book, Passages, was called "a road map of adult life". Several of her books continue the theme of passages through life's stages, including menopause and what she calls "Second Adulthood", including Pathfinders, Spirit of Survival, and Menopause: The Silent Passage. Her latest book, Sex and the Seasoned Woman,
reveals a hidden cultural phenomenon: a surge of vitality in women's
sex and love lives after age fifty. She wrote a biography of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Hillary's Choice. Her novel Middletown, America is being adapted as a TV miniseries.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Sheehy)__
